Story
TYPEFIGHTER was released in 2002 as an art project enabling two users to communicate with each other via a specially designed interface. The huge typewriting device consciously contravenes economic and ergonomic rules. Writing under its conditions requires extensive physical activity, the ultimate aim being for users to illustrate their emotional condition through the intensity of their physical input. The concept tackles the subject of interaction between man and machine via 'interhuman communication' and was originally designed for two participants that are conversation partners, co-players and adversaries simultaneously, using their entire bodies to communicate thoughts, words and emotions.
Curator Axel Hildenbrandt (rutan.de) initiated a remake of the giant keyboard for the international furniture show IMM in Cologne in January. An entirely new electronical TYPEFIGHTER has been developed especially for this purpose. Thanks to the generous support of Koelnmesse GmbH, the huge device will be presented to a broad audience from January 14 - 20, 2008.
Visitors of the [d3] “design talents” event are offered the possibility to compose a personal E-Mail message to their family and friends using this giant keyboard: Individual greetings from afar to all at home. Obviously physical exertion is mandatory. The keyboard is almost as high as a person and responds to tangency, while the letters being typed are displayed in a large projection. The bodily expression transfered into the medium of writing can be captured on a photograph as well: A single key press produces a snapshot of the physical activity that can be attached to the E-Mail.
